GreenMelb is an innovative web app transforming waste management in Melbourne by making sustainability interactive and accessible. Inspired by rising environmental concerns and the gap in residential waste knowledge, GreenMelb provides a centralized platform for users to learn, engage, and make impactful changes to reduce waste in their everyday lives.

Redefining Waste Management for a Greener Melbourne

With features like an interactive map of waste centers, practical sorting guides, and gamified rewards, GreenMelb motivates users to adopt sustainable habits. The app includes a dynamic map powered by Mapbox API that displays nearby waste centers, aiding residents in responsible disposal. In addition to location data, it offers detailed guides for categorizing waste correctly and tips for reducing household waste effectively.

The app encourages users to minimize waste and promotes sustainable practices.

Tech and Design for a Sustainable Future

Built using React and Django, GreenMelb integrates seamlessly with the Mapbox API, bridging users with the locations they need. The team utilized MySQL for reliable storage of user data, waste information, and reward tracking. Working in Agile sprints, they tackled real-world challenges like accurate waste data collection and an engaging UI/UX to motivate eco-friendly habits.

Challenges and Proud Moments

Creating GreenMelb involved overcoming hurdles in real-time map integration and linking the frontend with backend data. However, successful integration of features like user rewards and waste sorting guides underscored the team’s achievement in building a truly user-friendly and sustainable app.

Looking Ahead

GreenMelb aims to expand into a mobile app, making waste management even more accessible. Plans to incorporate AI for personalized waste reduction tips and community-driven features will help GreenMelb become a community-oriented tool for sustainable living across Melbourne.

By integrating expanded waste categories, GreenMelb is set to make a profound impact on the city’s journey towards sustainability.
